• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Auto Engine Stop / Start?

You'll save $20 a year in gas, just hope that $500 starter lasts 25 years so you break even.

That’s why asked the question. Bmws Volvo’s and others whenever they restart in front of me that thing is loud I’m thinking can’t be good for whatever engine component to do that 100x a day. I like the idea of saving planet and wish could afford Tesla suv but...

I turn it off on the Stinger. Every time that thing restarts you can feel it. And being a turbo charged car, I can't see how the constant spooling and despooling could be good for them.

It only saves gas if you make stops lasting more then 10 seconds.
I believe Engineering Explained came to a conclusion of 7 seconds for his particular case. It depends on the vehicle. My RAM 1500 with eTorque saves fuel immediately because it has an electric starter-generator and battery pack to bring the engine up to idle speed, not just restart it using fuel.

So how do we use it efficiently on a 4 way stop. It’s useful on a long light but stop and go not so much?
If you're only going to stop for a split second, then yes, better off preventing the car from shutting off by either applying very light brake pressure, hitting the button to disable autostop, or just letting the car inch forward until you can go again.

How does the stop/start work in snowy conditions . example: when coming to a stop light
You can disable it, but have to disable it each time you turn the car on. The Stinger forum some people have disabled it permanently by wedging a business card tinto th switch to hold it down. I have just made it part of my start up routine. Start button, ISG off, Auto hold on.

So I took a piece of plastic actually the top from a Philadelphia cream cheese container folded it over and wedged it tight between the button. It holds it down and Permanently disable is the auto start stop feature.

This really works! If I was to take a black sharpe to the edge you would even see it.

Only problem is in todays traffic, one needs instant acceleration. Waiting even 1 second and not knowing if this thing will restart could injure or kill someone trying to merge into traffic.

I shoved the piece of plastic on mine a week ago keeping it off. Works great like I never had it. Best upgrade I did Turning it off.

We have had the car for 4 days and it is hardly noticeable. Beside, it turns back on in 10 seconds regardless if you are still at the stop light.

What’s the point of it. It says shut off for no more then 30 seconds no matter what.

Love it! Does the button have to be pressed in to stay off?

Guys and gals this feature is brought to you by our government. Another way to help car companies meet the epa and fuel mileage mandates. They get a certain credit for doing this. It's not for your driving enjoyment and it's def not going to make your vehicle last longer or be more reliable. It's going to cost you plenty to have it repaired when the time comes. These starters and AGM batteries are high dollar. The money you will save in gas is a joke compared to the wear and tear on your vehicle.

Auto Start Stop has been around for awhile, I haven’t read (not that it doesn’t exist) significant increase of failing related components for Kia or other brands. The Telluride A.S.S. system is actually much smoother than my previous BMW’s.

So there you have it: Auto stop-start technology. Clever technology, quite robust, but perversely arrogant and bullshit at the same time. And useless to you as a practical matter. Let’s not forget that. A perfect metaphor for many of the people I’ve met in the automotive industry right there.
And of course, complexity is the enemy of reliability. Because this crap is really not providing a tangible benefit to you, not only is it unrefined, but also it is therefore just something else to go horribly wrong, potentially, down the track.
There’s a pleasant thought.
So if you’re test driving a vehicle with automatic stop/start, definitely use the test drive as an opportunity to decide whether you can tolerate the restart in particular, and look into whether the default state on startup for that system is ‘active’, or whether it remains off if you decide you don’t like it. And don’t take the sales guy’s word for this either - test it out until you are satisfied. I’m John Cadogan. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

So remember this is not a benefit to you but a cleaver way for the auto industry to help meet it's CAFE ratings at your expense.

You actually believe that adding cycles to the starting of your engine will not increase wear and failure?

I've noticed when the wife pulls into the garage with Hellie, the starter will restart the engine when she puts it into park. Anyone else experience this? I always turn the feature off when I'm driving so I haven't noticed it. Just happened to be in the garage when she pulled in and heard it.
