Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

I am not sure what to make of this but the Sussman in PA is giving me bad vibes.

1) I keep asking him if I can use the KIA motor financing at the time when the car gets here and he keeps saying his rates are better and wont answer YES or NO (quoting 1.99 APR which is actually a little higher than KIA right now).
2) Asking for non-refundable deposit

They call what they do a "factory order" but other places in the area Bergey just seems to shoot it more straight they say when they get an allocation that matches you with your place on the list they will give you a call and opportunity to put down a refundable deposit. Also not giving me a run around answer on the financing.

Not sure if I am being paranoid but it seems a little shady at Sussman but interested to hear if people had any issues using KIA financing there?

Another one to stay away from an South Carolina is Kia of Greer. I am looking to buy a 2nd Telly, no hurry, but cannot help but constantly look around. I stopped and was looking at a 2022 SX P they had stickered at 67k. They salesman later text me letting me know if I did not want to pay that and wanted to give up some features and functions, they had a 22 LX coming in a few weeks for 48k.

Hate writing a negative review but if anyone in Cincinnati area thinking of using Superior - don't. Major runaround and good luck getting what you want. Save your time and energy and go to Kings - if you know what you want in your Telly ask for Shawn who makes it so easy. Completely different experience in terms of professionalism and transparency at Kings who have been awesome to deal with. I don't think they work with folks outside of the region as they focus on serving people in this this area- which I agree with and obviously is how it should be - so this probably not applicable to buyers in other areas.

Sansone Kia wanted a minimum of $2500 to order an SX. Wouldn't budge off that. I can see asking for $1000, but no way are you holding $2500 for 4 months. Anyone else coming across this?

Most I was asked for was 1000 I don’t get the need for a deposit that high since these cars fly off the lot. What are they scared of?? It’s not like you can even customize too much.

Putting down $2,500 (even if it’s in advance) shouldn’t be an issue on a ~$50k purchase.

The real question is what is the purchase price including ADM, doc and any add-ons, packages etc that are “required”?

Quoted me $48,820, which was MSRP for what I wanted. Other dealers near me are charging $500 deposit. Might not be an issue for you, but giving a dealer $2500 to hold for months wasn't in my budget.

I'm not judging but if you can't put 5% as a bona fide down payment, you have to question if this is a vehicle for you. It'll be applied to purchase price so what's the big deal?

So… mentioning Sansone, I’m assuming you’re in NJ. Sansone and Nutley appear to be the only two dealers in NJ selling at MSRP. I bought from Nutley, and they actually took a 10% deposit. I didn’t have a problem with that… they were upfront about it, told me it would be refunded if I backed out when they sold the car to someone else, and it was less for me to finance.

Are any of those dealers taking $500 deposits selling at MSRP? If so, please let everyone know!

Murray Kia was when I ordered.

I25 in Colorado only asked me for $500 deposit and while not at MSRP they are darn close at $695 above MSRP

Ok but you didn’t answer the question… what are the line items after the sale price? Doc? Prep? Any add-ons?

As for a deposit, yeah it’s not ideal. But aside from a little forgone interest from your bank account what are you losing?

Document fee is a legit item dealer can charge and the limit varies from state to state.

There is no limit in NJ so even when the dealer tells you they are selling you the car “at MSRP” your OTD total can vary… a lot.

My local dealer was one of the few selling at MSRP. I initially ordered a 21’ AWD SXP NF/T in Gravity Gray with black Napa leather in October 2020. The refundable deposit was $1,000. After 9.5 months of waiting, I ended up with a 22’ in the same configuration of my initial order. I ended up paying cash for out the door price at 55k (includes the $1,000 deposit).

Two things here. First, I’d agree with a few comments that if a buyer isn’t looking to put at least 2% down payment on a 50k vehicle, you might be buying too high for your financial abilities. I have always either dropped a large down payment or paid in cash for my vehicles.
Second, I do agree with the frustration that the dealer would hold $2,500 for multiple months accruing interest benefits from a buyers hard earned money. Sucks knowing that my 1k was “working” for the dealer rather than for me in regards to compound interest for 9.5 months. But that is business and a buyer in the market for a car at this price should have no problem with $1,000 - $3,000 as a deposit to order which would be part of a down payment to the principal of the vehicle.

I am not sure how you can "agree" with both sides of the debate. I understand both sides of it. On one hand, I wouldn't give the dealer a penny when placing an order if I could get away with it...that certainly doesn't mean I can't afford the car. It's just I don't wanna part with my money until I absolutely have to. That being said, the most I've ever been asked to put down was $500 and I've ordered several cars. In those cases, it made a bit of sense because I ordered a car that was not available on any dealer the lots due to my unique color/option preferences. It may have been a bit risky for the dealer if I reneged on the order. In this case, as others have said, Tellurides are selling like hotcakes. As such, there is zero risk for the dealer since they could probably sell it within days if you pulled out of the deal (and probably for over MSRP) so why any money down let alone $2500? Regardless, if this is the only dealer selling for MSRP near you and the cost of the deal is a refundable $2500 down payment, I'd probably pony up the money. Interest rates are shit these days anyway so I don't know how that would break the budget more than paying over MSRP with another dealer that takes less of a down payment.

Many shady dealers. I looked in 8 states. Unfortunately my local dealers (Jack Daniels Kia & Liberty Kia) were shady and/or gouging.
I found the same thing. I was just at Englewood Kia. They are asking 10k over MSRP. I told them good-by. Did you happen to find a reasonable dealership near NJ-PA-NY?

People have been recommending Murray and Abeloff in PA. I’ve seen Sussman mentioned too
