I was totally hooked on getting an SXP. Surprisingly, my wife became a bigger fan after I took her to go look at one. We were in the market to replace a wrecked car.
In the Denver area they are marking them up $5k-10k AND adding ridiculous fees like etching windows and such. A few dealers will still go to MSRP for an order and then you apply military, financing or other discounts to go under. USAA auto buying will get you a $300 discount under MSRP for an SX P from what we could tell. Costco is only available in a few dealerships nationwide. You can order one from them, but will pay the difference in having the car delivered across the country.
We looked at the Telluride and then went to test drive a Hyundai Palisade Limited. We went back and forth over a week and pulled the trigger on a Palisade and love it. We already are in the market for a second car and went back to test drive the Telluride again. (We have been driving a Palisade Limited for a month now.)
We could not find an SX P in Denver to go look at. All seemed to be ordered and picked up the day they were dropped at the dealers. In the last week, we have received calls from several dealers on SX Ps that allegedly were delivered for orders and the deal fell through at the last minute. We were the third couple to look at one yesterday in that category. Who knows if this is true or if the crushing demand is more of a perception put out by the Kia dealers at this point. Adding thousands in upcharges DOES add to the perception by everyone that there really is a 20 person waiting list for every order.
We are very glad we did not buy the Telluride yet. The Palisade has a much roomier feel and better storage inside. I was unsure about the push button shifter-but it grows on you quickly. It really opens up the cabin to feel very sleek and roomy. The integration of the Navigation screen into the dash instead of sticking up like pretty much every vehicle on the road is nice too.
I even thought yesterday that we were getting punked getting into an SXP. I got in the Telluride and questioned why this SX P had actual gauges in the instrument cluster. I forgot that the SXP does not have a fully digital instrument cluster. The Telluride SXP has the actual gauges for speedo and tach with a screen in the middle. The Palisade has a huge screen and everything is digital. When you shift drive modes - the entire screen erupts in animation as it transitions to different colors and fonts to clearly show what mode you are in...
You can go buy a wonderful Palisade tricked out with everything for up to $2k UNDER MSRP if you qualify for first responder or military and ask for the All State Bonus Cash program ($500 for filling out a simple form). The dealer even dropped several hundred from MSRP without a rebate program covering it. We all know the dealer still makes money for moving a vehicle when they sell under MSRP. It is BS when they try telling you that they only make $200 on the sale of a car at MSRP.
Arapahoe Hyundai just south of Denver has a Limited Palisade on the lot in practically every color combination. When we bought they had a total of 44 Palisade in various trims on the lot. They technically charge a $2500 upcharge on Palisade, but will cave if you explain you want to buy, but won't pay a BS markup. Yes, you can get a luxury version of the Telluride for $46k out the door instead of $52-$60. That is a couple thousand UNDER MSRP. Marcus Porras helped us out and was really easy and straightforward to work with... This is saying a lot as we have talked to ten or so different Kia dealers in three states and several Hyundai dealers too.
I do like the exterior of the Telluride, but the Palisade is sweet and the interior experience is far nicer in my opinion.
I do get it that people stop Tellurides and ask what the hell it is. It is a handsome vehicle. Only a few have asked about our car in the neighborhood based on the exterior. Several have rode in it though. Each has exclaimed "Wow!" when they get inside. We have the beige interior and it really comes across roomy and luxurious.
There are only a couple major functional differences between a Palisade Limited and a Telluride SX P. The Palisade has the full digital instrument cluster and power third row seats. The Telluride has the sportier design and has folding mirrors, but manual folding third row seats. It feels like the comfort mode on the Telluride corresponds to the suspension and throttle response in Sport Mode on the Palisade. The Telluride does feel like it drives slightly sportier overall, but the Palisade feels more luxurious and roomier. The Palisade front seats are also a bit nicer in the opinion of most. The front passenger seat in the Palisade is 8 way power and just as comfy as the driver's seat. We noticed yesterday as many posted that the front passenger seat in the Telluride is not the same as the drivers seat in a few ways.
Finally, no matter what you do - the Geneva Auto Show is coming up in a couple weeks and rumors are Hyundai and Kia may be debuting new year models there. Between that AND new incentives coming out for March - save your money. Wait if you can and definitely walk away from anyone asking for charges over MSRP. The more people that pay this nonsense - the more they are emboldened to keep it up.
I am definitely not hating on the Telluride - we may still get one after the prices drop considerably. Just pointing out that you can get an amazing deal on something you may love from Hyundai. At least go check one out. There is a really nice warm and fuzzy feeling saving 5-10 thousand dollars too for arguably the same car and picking it up today.
We have learned too that you should never go buy something on the first day you test it out. Go drive a few different things on at least a couple different days. The weather, your mood, traffic, the order of vehicles you drive that day and such WILL affect your perceptions.
Hope this helps someone get what will really make them happiest and for the least money. Please don't pay Hyundai or Kia the upcharges!
