I was totally hooked on getting an SXP. Surprisingly, my wife became a bigger fan after I took her to go look at one. We were in the market to replace a wrecked car.

In the Denver area they are marking them up $5k-10k AND adding ridiculous fees like etching windows and such. A few dealers will still go to MSRP for an order and then you apply military, financing or other discounts to go under. USAA auto buying will get you a $300 discount under MSRP for an SX P from what we could tell. Costco is only available in a few dealerships nationwide. You can order one from them, but will pay the difference in having the car delivered across the country.

We looked at the Telluride and then went to test drive a Hyundai Palisade Limited. We went back and forth over a week and pulled the trigger on a Palisade and love it. We already are in the market for a second car and went back to test drive the Telluride again. (We have been driving a Palisade Limited for a month now.)

We could not find an SX P in Denver to go look at. All seemed to be ordered and picked up the day they were dropped at the dealers. In the last week, we have received calls from several dealers on SX Ps that allegedly were delivered for orders and the deal fell through at the last minute. We were the third couple to look at one yesterday in that category. Who knows if this is true or if the crushing demand is more of a perception put out by the Kia dealers at this point. Adding thousands in upcharges DOES add to the perception by everyone that there really is a 20 person waiting list for every order.

We are very glad we did not buy the Telluride yet. The Palisade has a much roomier feel and better storage inside. I was unsure about the push button shifter-but it grows on you quickly. It really opens up the cabin to feel very sleek and roomy. The integration of the Navigation screen into the dash instead of sticking up like pretty much every vehicle on the road is nice too.

I even thought yesterday that we were getting punked getting into an SXP. I got in the Telluride and questioned why this SX P had actual gauges in the instrument cluster. I forgot that the SXP does not have a fully digital instrument cluster. The Telluride SXP has the actual gauges for speedo and tach with a screen in the middle. The Palisade has a huge screen and everything is digital. When you shift drive modes - the entire screen erupts in animation as it transitions to different colors and fonts to clearly show what mode you are in...

You can go buy a wonderful Palisade tricked out with everything for up to $2k UNDER MSRP if you qualify for first responder or military and ask for the All State Bonus Cash program ($500 for filling out a simple form). The dealer even dropped several hundred from MSRP without a rebate program covering it. We all know the dealer still makes money for moving a vehicle when they sell under MSRP. It is BS when they try telling you that they only make $200 on the sale of a car at MSRP.

Arapahoe Hyundai just south of Denver has a Limited Palisade on the lot in practically every color combination. When we bought they had a total of 44 Palisade in various trims on the lot. They technically charge a $2500 upcharge on Palisade, but will cave if you explain you want to buy, but won't pay a BS markup. Yes, you can get a luxury version of the Telluride for $46k out the door instead of $52-$60. That is a couple thousand UNDER MSRP. Marcus Porras helped us out and was really easy and straightforward to work with... This is saying a lot as we have talked to ten or so different Kia dealers in three states and several Hyundai dealers too.

I do like the exterior of the Telluride, but the Palisade is sweet and the interior experience is far nicer in my opinion.

I do get it that people stop Tellurides and ask what the hell it is. It is a handsome vehicle. Only a few have asked about our car in the neighborhood based on the exterior. Several have rode in it though. Each has exclaimed "Wow!" when they get inside. We have the beige interior and it really comes across roomy and luxurious.

There are only a couple major functional differences between a Palisade Limited and a Telluride SX P. The Palisade has the full digital instrument cluster and power third row seats. The Telluride has the sportier design and has folding mirrors, but manual folding third row seats. It feels like the comfort mode on the Telluride corresponds to the suspension and throttle response in Sport Mode on the Palisade. The Telluride does feel like it drives slightly sportier overall, but the Palisade feels more luxurious and roomier. The Palisade front seats are also a bit nicer in the opinion of most. The front passenger seat in the Palisade is 8 way power and just as comfy as the driver's seat. We noticed yesterday as many posted that the front passenger seat in the Telluride is not the same as the drivers seat in a few ways.

Finally, no matter what you do - the Geneva Auto Show is coming up in a couple weeks and rumors are Hyundai and Kia may be debuting new year models there. Between that AND new incentives coming out for March - save your money. Wait if you can and definitely walk away from anyone asking for charges over MSRP. The more people that pay this nonsense - the more they are emboldened to keep it up.

I am definitely not hating on the Telluride - we may still get one after the prices drop considerably. Just pointing out that you can get an amazing deal on something you may love from Hyundai. At least go check one out. There is a really nice warm and fuzzy feeling saving 5-10 thousand dollars too for arguably the same car and picking it up today.

We have learned too that you should never go buy something on the first day you test it out. Go drive a few different things on at least a couple different days. The weather, your mood, traffic, the order of vehicles you drive that day and such WILL affect your perceptions.

Hope this helps someone get what will really make them happiest and for the least money. Please don't pay Hyundai or Kia the upcharges!

Many members of this forum are dedicated to NOT paying markups for the Telluride... and many have succeeded. It just takes quite a bit of work with the tools we have on the forum.

Nevertheless, welcome, and enjoy the Palisade. It is a fine vehicle. I considered it too, but ended up with an SXP for around 45k after discounts (plus tax and fees). I couldn't work the same deal for an AWD Limited at the time I purchased. Telluride provided a better value proposition for me (and many members of forum), but glad you're happy!

The different features you mentioned have been discussed a lot in other threads.

What discounts?

What discounts?

I had an April order delivered in August. Prior to September, could get $1500 finance rebate and another $1000 loyalty discount off MSRP. Destination charge was lower too, and MSRP increased on 1/3/20.

Story is a bit different now.

A couple of other differences that matter to some:
Palisade doesn't have auto up/down on the rear windows...just the fronts. The Telluride is auto up down on all windows
Telluride has more storage behind the 3rd row due to the space not needed for the power folding rear seats.

At the end of the day - they are two great vehicles. Honestly - I would have ordered a Palisade except for the two items above that bug me and I absolutely hate the wheels on the Palisade Limited. And finally...and most important...the wife likes the look of the Telluride better. :)

Awesome!!!! More people who got their Telluride at UNDER MSRP need to shout it out and encourage others to do the same.

We might still get a Telluride as the second new car - but will only feel good about it by getting a deal like yours. We saw from lots of forum posts that some Hyundai dealers are being almost as bad as the worst Kia ones too.

We have a few threads on those topics... :) Ha. Again, welcome.

Actually, the rear space is 3 cubic feet less in the Palisade and doesn't have to do with the motorized third row. It is simply the shape of the rear of the vehicle. The Telluride gives slightly better third row head room too. Actually, I would rather have no motor on the third row (another thing to break down the road) and instead have the motorized mirrors.

They are both awesome cars and really are the same car with style and relatively minor feature differences. I know some people take it really personally as an insult to say one is better than the other. We may end up owning one of each, but paying thousands over MSRP for either is a travesty!

I got my SXP at MSRP 2 wks ago, had to hunt but it can be done. I could have my choice of any of the 27 Palisade or 7 limited ones down the street from me (I guess they sold a couple last week). All including Limited are advertised for under MSRP before incentives.

The look of the Palisade is very polarizing. It's either a love it or hate it thing. It just wasn't for us. Also don't like how the hitch looks on the rear (looks like it was just thrown on afterwards, but apparently how Koreans like it). And I'm not ready for a dial or push button shifter.

To each their own I guess. As more are produced, Tellurides will come down in price. I imagine at that point the Palisade will be even cheaper yet.

I think you mean the Palisade has 3 less cubic feet in the rear. I also noticed the Palisade third row seats do not fold as flat/level as they do in the Telluride...and I think this IS due to the motorized seats. I actually checked both cars with a level, and it’s a big difference. This is a pet peeve of mine...sloping cargo areas drive me nuts! The Palisade’s slope is not as severe as an Explorer’s, but it’s noticeable.

Love the tech on the Palisade but I like the more traditional looks of the Telluride. I also pronounce Hyundai wrong so my wife said there's no way we are even looking at it, lol.

Glad you are enjoying your car.

Strictly speaking, don't pay dealers the upcharges, not Hyundai or Kia.
Overall, I agree on your opinion. Palisade is a perfect alternative for Telluride.

We looked at the Palisade. That was my preferred vehicle when I first saw them both. Over time, I started to like the Telluride more and I still do now. Went to a Hyundai dealership, and we didn't press hard, but they were at MSRP and didn't have any in stock at the time. We ended up getting a Telluride a few weeks later for a under MSPR. Palisade is a nice vehicle. Different people care about different things and taste is personal.

I agree. My big point was to be sure to check them both out and please, please don’t pay a penny over MSRP.

Another consideration is size of the driver. If you are under 6’ tall the Telluride might still feel cavernous. The style of both vehicles is great, but its almost like comparing an orange and a banana. Hard to compare a luxury trim with a sporty trim. I totally get it that some love the Hyundai grill and I joked that it sort of reminds me of the station wagon Chevy
Chase drove in National Lampoons Vacation.(It had like three sets of headlights.).

Forums like this help educate people and maybe even point out discounts or dealers to check out. It can be intimidating for many buying a car and you always need to feel comfortable walking away. Hearing you don’t have to pay over MSRP might be enough to get someone to stay strong and get a deal they feel great about!

One other pet peeve is the extended warranty nonsense. The finance guy at Hyundai tried telling us the windshield costs $3000 to replace(he never heard of auto insurance I guess), the engine costs $15,000, the navigation screen costs $12,000 to replace and the car has hundreds of sensors that are hundreds of dollars each on the low side. I gasped, looked at my wife and told her in front of him Hyundai is selling us a $500,000 vehicle for under $50,000! What a deal!!!

He then asked us to initial that he gave us the spiel and we got out of there. I know its his job to sell added stuff - but his sales pitch was funny and a little sad.

After the fact, we thought of a great line to shut the finance guy down. His first question was about how long we planned on keeping the Palisade. We said close to a decade. We should have said 6 months. Hard to argue for extended anything at that point.

Palisade was my original choice as well. I grew to love the Telluride more and LOVE it.

Personally, I think the Palisade interior is, maybe, slightly nicer than the Telluride's and I think it has some advantages in terms of how the options can be configured. It's also effectively cheaper as more dealers are honoring Costco pricing on them.

The problem was my wife thought it was ugly and wouldn't budge on it.

I think your wife was right...lol

I apparently got lucky. Just bought my wife a gravity gray SX-P with carpeted mats and no other options for msrp minus the $1K rebate and $400 military rebate, with 2.75% financing for 48 months. The salesman wrote up the deal with the $1K rebate to me when his sales maanger wanted it written up to them (on the paperwork it read $1K over msrp and then subtract the rebate). I kinda shamed the sales manager and he wound up giving it to me.

No up sells and dealer fees were $339 total so I think I got a great deal all things considered. We thought hard on the Pallisade, but the push button shifter and exterior appearance difference left her really wanting the Tellurid.
