Kia Telluride Vs GV80

🤖 AI Summary

Price announced. $48,900 starting price. I knew it would be <50K and pick up right where the Telluride leaves off. ; )

And you'll have to spend $72k to get all the features of an SX-P or Palisade Limited.

Really? What do those two models have that would require a GV80 optioned out at 72K? I haven’t had a chance to compare the SX-P features with the <50K GV80.

Nappa seats, LCD instrument cluster, cooled rear seats, microfiber headliner, etc. That's cost of going to a luxury brand I suppose. Granted, the Genesis is a "nicer" car overall and it has a lot of other exclusive kit but you pay the price!

Instead of cherry-picking individual features, let’s look at it from a different perspective. What does the GV80 offer at $48,900 that the Telluride does not in terms of features, quality of standard materials, etc.

I'd say from the photos alone, the materials definitely look nicer, as you would expect from a Genesis. Besides that, I think at the base price, it's equipped like a Telluride EX.

You can't compare top trims. The GV80 is on a RWD platform and offers a significantly more powerful top engine. Apples and Oranges here. Might as well be comparing the Telluride to the Lincoln Aviator...

I think we all get that, at least I do. It's still fun to note the differences, I think.

Agreed. Telluride SX-P versus GV80 base model is an interesting comparison considering they are essentially the same price.

If you don't need the space, and appreciate the quirky styling, the GV80 looks pretty damn nice. It should surely perform better on the road. The Telly is definitely soft off the line in terms of torque. My finances and preferences have me go for loaded mainstream models versus lightly optioned luxo offerings. Besides, that GV80 is too nice inside for anyone that has kids!

Lol Which is exactly why we passed on the prestige package! That headliner is too nice for toddlers. HUD would've been nice tho

The GV80 is one to wait on. I wouldn't rush out and purchase it at MSRP or potentially higher. Unlike the Telluride, it has significant margin baked into price to attempt to compete with offerings from Mercedes and BMW. I'll wait for the reviews, but I highly doubt it will handle as well as an X5... and I think demand in the US will be rather minimal compared to other luxury options in that price range. Then, the discounts will appear. It's an intriguing entry into luxury segment, but at that price I think the luxury manufacturers have nothing to be concerned about.

The HUD is awesome. I had one before I missed it when I got rid of that car. Good thing about the headliner is that small kids can barely reach it once they're seated!

I think it will be be great competition against the popular XC90, which can get way up there in price and has a questionable drive train. Genesis doesn't have to beat the X5 and GLE to be successful. They just need to lure buyers who don't want to spend $100k on those cars with options.

X5 is nowhere near 100k with options. A well optioned x7 is around 90k.

when I saw the pricing i was shocked because I believe they priced themselves out of the market give the relative lack of cache in the Genesis name.

$48,900 is priced out of the market? Were you expecting it to be cheaper than a Kia? I’m confused.

I think the wild success of the Telluride and Palisade May have caused them to overprice the GV80 a bit. Yeah, it starts at 49K, but that means you’re getting a 4 cyl. engine, two rows, leatherette seating, and a mostly analog gauge cluster. The base doesn’t even have ventilated seats or wireless charging. You don’t get the good stuff until you add the Advance or Prestige packages, which, with AWD, take you well above 60K.

Considering the lack of features on the base, I think they should have started at about 45K, and topped out around 67K or 68K all in.

I think it may be a hard sell, especially given how much car you get with the loaded Telluride/Palisade models for about 48K (if you can find them).

On its face, I think it's a bit high. This is really a two row SUV with a tiny not practical "3rd row" option, so it really shouldn't compare against 3 row options. That being said, a base XC60 starts around 40k, and a base RX 350 starts at 44k for FWD and 45k for AWD.

I do think it could be less than a fully loaded Telluride or Palisade - different markets and different size classes. But, I guess they are targeting X5 buyers, and priced it $10k below X5 starting price.

Maybe that's reasonable and a good deal - I won't know until I compare in that class. But for a 4 cylinder base engine... the X5 base is a 3.0L V6.

We'll see. I think I may want to pick up a GV80 off lease in a few years! Definitely not rushing out for it.

Genesis however wants to be a luxury marque, so if they're not concerned with volume, then they don't want to underprice it. The soak the wealthy strategy is working well for luxury manufacturers... maybe Genesis can start to pull this off too. Interested to explore it.

My take is that they’re about $3-5K higher than they should be in the middle and upper option packages. The price is solidly in GLE and X5 territory and far exceeds MDX territory. Ultimately I don’t care about MSRP, I care about leases. Current Genesis leases are lackluster and if this can’t compete with MDX and XC90 leases, people will stick with X5 and GLEs.

i was going to preorder one but I’m not now. I’ll wait it out because I don’t foresee these flying off the lots unless the 3.5 leases are under $650/mo.
