Trailer Hitch

So Palisade has tow package included in top trim, cooling transmission(something that telluride doesn’t have?) and sway control(is that just different wording for auto level suspension), they pore lack proper wiring and claim that can tow 5000lbs which is false and misleading, because you can’t tow 4000+lbs trailer SAFELY!
look at towing on the Palisade. I think it says 1950 towing if i remember what i read

I got the tow hitch installed from the dealership and noticed that the ball was not provided. I have the extension that connects, but not the ball. Again, I have very little experience with towing. Was this the same for anyone else?

If we are all thinking the same, then nobody is thinking.

I am not aware of any dealership/factory option that would include the ball. There are 3 common size hitch balls - 1-7/8", 2" and 2-5/16". Doubtful you would be pulling a trailer with a 2-5/16" ball that is under 5000 lbs. Most hitches under 5000 lbs are now 2", 1-7/8" is becoming less common. It is because of this that the ball is not included, because not all trailers are the same. I have 2 different hitches, that have dual adjustable height balls. Once has a 1-7/8" ball (my Dad still has a couple of trailers with this) and a 2" ball. My other hitch has a 2" and 2-5/16" for my heavier trailers. I only buy Anderson Rapid Hitches now. They are aluminum so they don't rust, can tow up to 10,000 lbs with 1500 lb tongue weight and they can be be used as a drop or raise hitch to accommodate different vehicles and trailer combinations. Link below

You can source just a ball for the hitch that was included. Measure the opening diameter, most hitches balls have a 3/4" or 1" threaded shaft. Purchase the ball size that fits your trailer and the threaded shaft that fits the opening of the hitch. Also keep in mind that your trailer should ideally be level when towed. The hitch you received with your tow package may not level your trailer correctly.

Side Note: It is really tough to type all of this stuff about balls and shafts and not giggle inside a little. :ROFLMAO:

Oh quit lying you know the three sizes of balls are too big, too small, and just big enough to catch your fingers between them and the hitch.

I found this on another forum. Don't have time to look at it due to travel plans. But please take a look for those that needed the 7 pin tow adapter.
My S did not come with the tow package, but I did pull off the black cover in the driver side behind the bumper and that 12 pin connector is sitting there. So the good news is that it should be a simple DIY. The frustrating part is when I looked closer there were only 6 wires. So my guess is that pins 1-6 are what goes to the harness and the 7 connects to 1, 8 to 2, 9 to 3, 10 to 4, 11 to 5, and 12 to 6. The 12 pin does not appear to have the reverse lights nor the output for a brake controller to head back to the front of the car.

So wiring the Echo wireless brake controller module still would be just use the 4 pin and run a wire with fuse to the battery or tap another 12v source and a ground. (Leave two disconnected.

To get the full 7 pins for a typical brake controller you would need to run a second wire along with the one to the battery as output to the brake controller and then also find a place to tap into the reverse lights which in the Telluride are in the hatch.
I found this on another forum looking for something else. I was not sure how the owner of the forum felt about me linking another Tully forum. So here is a copy of what I found. I have not had to chance to look at this. But if the wires for the 7 pin that are missing could be tapped from here and run to the rear of the car. Calling out all the DIYers and Tinkerers.

If everyone is thinking the same, then nobody is thinking.
I see the trailer connector 30A fuse. And I see where I might be able to tap into something that might have power for the AWD version on my 2WD Telluride to power a brake controller. The mystery to me is how the light wiring harness feeds the reverse lights on the hatch. I’ll try to keep digging.

I thought I deleted the portion of my post but auto save must have added it back. As I could not provide the pics from my phone and changed to laptop.

Hope I shed some light to a topic I just learned about. If I get a chance to look into the 7 pin. I'll keep you posted

If everyone is thinking the same, them nobody is thinking.

I have been reading many threads and multiple forums trying to find an answer to the lack of a 7 pin wire harness. I just spoke to my Kia dealer which installed my hitch after delivery on my S with the standard 4 pin harness. He contacted Kia for me and told me that Kia IS working on a 7 pin harness which will be available next year. He did also confirm it will be available for the 2020 so it must use the same harness that the 4 pin plugs into currently. Still not sure how that will work with a trailer brake controller, might still need to be wired into the cab or use the Curt wireless/Bluetooth set up. It would be great if someone else confirm this with their Kia dealer, would feel little better coming from multiple sources.

Interesting info. They need to increase that tongue weight rating to at least 500 lbs to make this a viable towing vehicle. If they do that, I'll take another look.

Check this out - just don't go with the OEM option and problem solved.

Looks like I might be replacing my OEM hitch with the Curt. And if Kia can get the 7 pin wire harness out to us, then I'm good to go.

Curt install sheet still says not to exceed the manufacturer's towing guidelines. Owner's manual says 351 lbs tongue weight. Exceeding that even with an aftermarket hitch may still void your warranty.

Thanks, yes, I saw your other post. This is something that needs to be resolved by Kia corporate - their owner's manual seems wrong or misleading at best - or they just don't understand it correctly. Even the owner's manual says that max trailer weight shouldn't be more than 10% of tongue weight - and the two numbers in the manual don't make sense. Wish we had more clarity on this topic - so we wouldn't have to speculate what they meant by those numbers in the manual... frame vs. oem hitch (tow package) etc.

This is nothing new, unfortunately. They have pulled the same bait and switch with the Sorento towing capacity over the years.

Our local dealer wants $500 and $291 for the hitch and 4-pin harness, respectively. I can do the Curt 13420 hitch for $275ish, which still seems pricey. I have used Curt hitches in the past on several vehicles - they are very nice units. I'd still have to get a harness. Does anyone have a dealer or online source to get the factory parts cheaper than what our local dealer is quoting?

Wholesalekiaparts.com had decent prices on OEM but you have to search by part #. There is an aftermarket harness now on etrailer.com.

Thanks! Their prices for the OEM parts are pretty good:
Hitch: S9F61-AU000 $288
Hitch cover: S9F61-AU060 $40.25
4-pin Wire harness: S9F67-AC000 $138.75
Almost $80 shipping to NC from GA though. Woof.

This is the way I'll be going instead to save some $:
Ebay Curt 13420 hitch for $279 (free ship and no tax)
Ebay Tekonsha 118784 harness for $41 (free ship and no tax) [this is the harness etrailer is selling for the Telluride]
Note the curt hitch requires a small cutout of the stock lower bumper cover rather than replacing it.

Simple but important question for you all: Anyone know which way the ball should be mounted on the Ball Mount? The diagram from the part is as shown below, which would imply mounting on the top with arch concaved downward, and this looks similar to the white Telluride Brochure in dealerships, but I saw a video from a Kia dealer showing the exact opposite, see below and thanks in advance.
