Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

Galeana Kia of Columbia doesn't have the stock or the knowledge. I purchased my Chrysler there (Chrysler/Jeep side). I asked them to quote me an S basic, and the guy kept telling me that captain chairs were part of a premium package and insisted on selling me a car that I was not asking for. I thought to give them another shot and same thing. I had to screen shot where Kia's website had the captain chairs listed as a standard feature of the S.

However, I went to JT's Kia of Columbia, and wanted to test the car they had on their website. 15 tellurides were listed. I get there the next day and only a used 2020 Telluride S was available for me to test drive, and they tried to sell that to me. After I was adamant about only purchasing what I wanted to purchase, they finally quoted me a factory build. It took 1 week of going back and forth with both JT Kia and Galeana to just receive a quote. The sales manager at JT's said it could take 4-6 weeks for the car to be completed, then quoted 8-10 weeks, with a $1999 dealer mark-up and a mandatory $499 ELO GPS installation fee (which I believe would already be on the vehicle, but they want to recoup the cost from the customer) once I sat down with them going over the features. And they wanted a NR $1000 deposit. The $2500 markup seems to be in line with JT's Kia, as well. I eventually told them that I wanted to get another financing option secured before I commit to the deposit.

I took the knowledge and went to another dealership in NC and asked for a quote, which they provide within 1 hour! (Not 1 week of constant back and forth from the local dealers). I told them about my quote and they matched the out the door price, but wanted $1000 down to hold it over the phone. Since I can't see any documents, I declined the deposit (which would be NR, more than likely), but will visit them tomorrow.
Any updates? Which dealer was it in NC? JT's of Rock Hill also quoted me $2500 markup.

I started my Kia purchasing experience in April 2020 at Jerry Seiner KIA in Salt Lake City Utah. My husband and I went in to order our Telly on April 9th, a couple of days after I finally got to test drive it around the block. By the time we wanted to order, I was handed off to two different salesmen. The young man we ended up ordering with was Drew. He just rubbed me the wrong way from the get go. After I did 6 months of research on the Telly, I felt like I knew more about this car than he did. He tried hard to make us think he knew better (insert rolling eyes here). As we were leaving, he told us that it would take 4-6 months (seemed reasonable with Covid just starting) for us to get our car and that he would call us every month to give me updates on where it is in the ordering process. He NEVER called me. After a couple of months I decided to call. During this call he informed me that I won’t be getting my car for 5-8 more months and that it will be a 2021 and I will be paying more money. He reassured me that I was still in line for the order to be processed, however. He then, again, let me know that he would call. Since I was now getting the 2021 model I wanted to research what types of upgrades or options were. I found the new options wonderful, so I called at the beginning of July and asked if we could get the Telly in wolf grey NF package without losing my place in line for the ordering process. Yes, that was possible! So we went in again to get official paperwork with the new NF package and then some original options. Once again, we were told we would get a call every month with updates. No updates, big surprise. In the middle of October after not hearing from them, I called. I was told Drew went to management and that’s why I hadn’t heard from anyone. What a bunch of crock, I hadn’t heard from him when he was my salesman!! So then they told me I would be working with another salesman. “Great,” I thought. “Maybe this salesman would be better.” HA! Nope. He told me I was sitting at 20th in the queue for orders (which was where I was in July when we reordered), I was still at 20. How could this be?! I was so mad. He passed me off to another salesman. This salesman, did end up calling me at the end of November to let me know that I have now moved to 1st SX in line. Seem strange?! Yep! From 20th to 1st in a few weeks. Sounds fishy like they knew they messed up.

I decided to check failcat in December to see if there were any cars describing my order. I saw their first Wolf Grey SX N/T/P. So, I called and asked if this was my car. A different salesman told me that it was. I was so excited. But, because the VIN tab wasn’t working on failcat, I couldn’t see the sticker. So the salesman sent me the sticker through email. It wasn’t my car. I had not ordered the specific options that were on the sticker. I called back and let them know that that wasn’t my car, even though my name was assigned to it in their records. He started arguing with me telling me that it was my car. I emailed him my order. I knew it was too good to be true. Finally, I got to talk to the manager. He did his best to apologize and reassure me my car was being built, but didn’t give me any date or when it was picked up by KIA. He told me the reason mine wasn’t showing up was because I ordered things that the factory didn’t have. But, he reassured me, he could put those things on when it got to the dealership. The dealership had them but the factory where the car is being built doesn’t have them?! Is this for real? I don’t understand how this could be. Anyway. Two weeks ago, 1-15-2021, I went back on failcat to see if there were anymore WG SX N/T/P. Three more were added. Once again I couldn’t see the sticker for the VIN’s posted, so I called to talk with the manager. He told me none of those were my car but that my car “is” being built with an ETA of March 6th but doesn’t have a VIN yet. Why no one called to let me know that things were moving forward, beats me?! The manager told me those cars I saw were for delivery Feb 28th- March 7th. He skirted around a couple of my questions but, whatever, I finally had a ETA. Last week, 1-19-2021, I was able to click on the VIN to see all the stickers. What do I find? My car was indeed one of the three posted the week prior. It had all my options. But yet I was told none of those were mine. So, being the pest that I am, I called and gave them the specific VIN that had all of my options from my order. Another salesman looked up the VIN and said, that yes, my name was placed on that VIN. Why wouldn’t the manager tell me that when I called? All in all, from all the salesmen I worked with to the manager, my experience has been horrible. No one could ever give me an honest answer. If you live in Utah, stay away from Jerry Seiner KIA. Needless to say, I told them they may not put their name anywhere on my car. In the end, I know I should have just gone to a different dealer. Sigh...
I ordered at Young Kia in Layton and have been a bit frustrated also. I submitted a down payment in mid-August and still have no ETA. Only get a random text every couple months with a crappy update. It will be 9 months from order to delivery. These dealers shouldn't accept orders at all with this sorry ass customer service. Why even bother.

Dang, I was thinking of going to Layton, too, last April. I guess either one I would have gotten the run around. At least you got some sort of communication, even if it was a text. Good luck.

Unfortunately it doesn’t sound great. It’s really frustrating for sure. 9 months is obscene. Get your $ back and look elsewhere.

Watch out for them. They told me that they sold at MSRP. What they failed to mention were the "required" add-ons that marked it up a few K which I had found out about before consummating the deal. They get the one-fingered salute every time I drive past.......

Latest attempt at Camelback Kia - Not sure if I would consider a bad dealer - just greedy. Maybe this running dialogue will help explain.

First contact on online sales at dealership.
I Requested info on a website listed SX - $50,710.
The reply greeting was an Auto Response – Generic carded greeting from Sales Manager 1. Here we go.
---------------------
Me- (After first robot contact)
Good morning XXXXX,
Thanks for getting back. I would like to know a few things before looking any further into this.
• Is this vehicle on the lot? Or still to be delivered?
• Cost – I would like to see the sticker with the over’s and add-ons. Sell at MSRP?
• Available Stock – Other SX models in stock? Due date on others?
• The stock images are a bit confusing. Do you have a few to attach that are of the actual -on the lot?

I’m sure there will be more questions, but this will get us started down that path.
Thanks again

Him-
This Telluride is a special order and isn't available at the moment. I do have one coming in March that is the same configuration.
----------------------
Me -
Thanks for getting back XXXX.
Per my earlier questions, I am interested in being put on the list for this vehicle, but am still wanting to know a few of these items.
I believe I talked to you briefly on the phone yesterday as well. I am really trying to keep this vehicle at or near MSRP, but am needing to understand actuals, so that I can move on if needed. I would appreciate all you can tell me, knowing that you don’t “have the vehicle yet”. I am in XXXXX, (150mi away) so I feel that going up there to discuss deposits and expected cost, isn’t necessary. Does that make sense?
I would love to say, hold that Telluride for me, but not blindly.
Appreciate your help on this.
---------------------
Him -
I completely understand. This configuration is the most popular of the Tellurides. That being said we allow deposits on incoming Telluride but that is done in store.
-------------------
Me –
Thanks XXXX,
Still trying to justify a drive up to your dealership. Possibly next weekend. Maybe you can tell me a couple other things that would help.
Are there any SX’s on site to see now?
Do you have a list to share that shows others that are delivering over the next few months?
Are you taking new orders now? If so, when do those go in during the month? Currently tracking time? 3-4months? 6 months+?
Thanks again
-----------------------
Him –
I currently do not have an SX on site. I dont have a list of Tellurides coming in. You can order one it take between 3 to 6 months to get here.

Another carded message sent (Next day) ?
“Hello XXXX,
I wanted to send you a quick email and see if you are still in the market for Kia Telluride. It has been a while since you inquired, so please let me know. If you haven't already, you can begin building your deal here.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you, and have a great day!”

Me -
Assuming this was an automatic email generation, since you and I talked over the weekend. Still have an interest in that second white SX that’s coming in March, I believe you said. Can you find out what all is in that package? SX AWD, White/Black, Prestige? Nightfall? Tow? Other?
Thanks

Tues 2/2
Him –
Yes I can certainly check on that for you with my boss XXXX and get back to you shortly here!!
----------------------------

Me -
Thanks XXXX,
Appreciate you looking into this for me. I think I may see why there has been some confusion on my part. Multiple XXXX’s. I am not sure which one I talked to by email or phone call last weekend.
Let me know what you find out. Thanks again

XXXX!
So i did some digging on whats inbound and it looks like we will have one White SX prestige nightfall with black interior , and also one in the same configuration thats not a prestige! Both of the vehicles are still currently available and do not have deposits taken on them yet, however keep in mind there will be a market adjustment on them as it has been there since day one of release on the Tellurides, Let me know if you would like to proceed with a $1000.00 deposit to give you first rights to the car once it arrives and if you end up not wanting to go through with the purchase we can then refund your deposit! All we need to do the deposit is a picture of the card being used front and back as well as drivers license front and back!
I'd expect the market adjustment to be around 7-9k over sticker plus taxes and fees and dealer protection package added in

Me -
Thanks XXXX,
A couple things to question -
What time frame are you seeing on this? When do you expect it on your lot?
Accepted into KFOS? In production? VIN Released?

Thanks
--------------------
Him -
No vin number yet on the vehicle, it’s ETA is showing March 15th for arrival, we are able to do the deposit on it if you would like to agree on pricing prior to actually completing the deposit! Let me know, and of course if you do end up wanting to do the deposit I’d let you know the vin number as soon as it’s available and send you over the window sticker as soon as I can get it also so you can see every feature and function on the vehicle itself
-----------------------
Me -
Thanks XXXX,
So here is where I’m at -
Assuming that is an AWD model, (didn’t see it mentioned). I am also following a few out of state locations that are offering orders at MSRP plus tax/Lic/fees. No mark up or extras.
That said, I would be on the list at just over cost, plus the 4-5 months wait and delivery to (My City).
I am interested, but not for 7-9K more. I really need to know what you ordered on that vehicle. What can you tell me about any extra info? TOW? Accessories? Other costs?

Thanks
------------------------------
Him -
Yes it would be fully loaded, awd tow package, its prestige so it will have every option standard on it, however it will 100% for sure sell well over window sticker and im just being honest with you, this vehicle is inbound and will be ready in about 4-5 weeks, the window sticker is about 50k
-------------------------------
Me -
So then,
Let’s get to the numbers. Let’s assume, this exact vehicle landed today. What would I be paying out the door? Close counts.
----------------------------------
Next Sales Manager –
XXXX,
We can secure that vehicle with a 1,000 deposit. Which I'd recommend since it will sell before it will arrive. You'd be looking at 67,500 OTD. There is a Telluride similar here that you can test drive to get the best feel for the car before it arrives. Let me know what you want to do next.
-------------------------------
Me -
All yours XXXXX,
I’ll be moving on. Appreciate your time.
--------------------------
Him -
Sounds good! Thank you for your time and best of luck

I’m so sorry about your experience, were you working with the dealership in south Jordan? I ask because I have my order with them and James is the salesman I’m working with and he has been great with communication and updates. I ordered in December and I have been getting updates even before me reaching out to them and I just got my initial ETA of 4-27 just over a week ago.

Wow! I wish I would have gone to South Jordan. I never thought about going to down there. I’m glad you’re having a better experience and a better salesman. It’s not taking almost a year to get your Telly.

New here and probably been reiterated but here’s my experience:
Vegas area: Jim Marsh & Towbin: $3-7k MU
DTLA Kia: $3-7k MU
Ventura Kia: $3-5k MU
Palm Springs Kia: $5-7k MU (don’t forget sales tax here is 9.5%)
Victorville Kia: MSRP but $3k MU on dealer installs (basically roundabout way to MU)
Irvine Kia: $10k MU on an EX premium (was previously listed at $40k msrp then updated online after I inquired). The internet sales lady was willing to sell an SX trim for MSRP, looks like someone here bought it a few pages back, I think was due to the color combo.

May/may not be the right forum but I’m currently in talks with Kia of Carson, quoted an OTD price of MSRP EX premium trim. I’m in Vegas so wondering if anyone can provide any details as most of the reviews state that Carson Kia has MUs on the 50+ tellurides sitting on their lot. Sounds like a bait and switch to me but not sure how purchasing a car online goes. Any advice/help? All these MU’s really make me just want to pay the extra $1k and get the Palisade SEL prem pkg.
I’m also in Vegas. Same experience at almost all the same dealerships. I’m from Ventura & go to Palm Springs often. DTLA would sell me one at MSRP, no add ons but they said I either had to pay CA tax & register there or flatbed it to NV. All the MSRP dealerships in CA I found have told me this. I gave up & ordered from Findlay Kia on Sahara last week. They do charge a $790 dealer package (see pic). And doc fees are high at $400+. In hindsight, I think Cerritos might have been the best deal I found- MSRP, very low doc fee, would get me a DMV permit so I could drive it home but they wouldn’t budge on $599 theft tracking crap. If you decide to order from Findlay, talk to Michelle or Justin in the Internet department.

Jim Marsh Kia and Towbin Kia in Henderson, NV are charging at least 6K over MSRP for an SX Pre. NO BUDGING. Jim Marsh has a sales person named Kelly who seems to hate the Telluride, she bragged about the email she set up - KellynoTelly. Findley Kia in Las Vegas is charging 2K over MSRP for anything SX and above.
Findlay Kia in Vegas is no longer charging a mark up on any models but they wouldn’t budge on the $790 dealer package that includes tint, loaner vehicles, car washes, 1st year maintenance & a few things. Doc fees are also high at over $400 but I ordered one last week as I couldn’t find a better option. CA dealerships at MSRP require shipping (can’t drive it home) or registering it there so negated any savings.

Not directly Telluride related, but still Kia Dealership...
Southern Kia Lynnhaven in Virginia Beach. Purchased 2 Souls and a 2020 Telluride. Referred 2 other families that purchased a total of 5 vehicles from them. Leadership changed now they are horrible. Paperwork and final arrangements for the Telluride were screwed up. We got impatient after being at the dealership for 5 hours to finalize the lease on our Telluride. Never actually got a full copy of our final documents. The 12,000 mile/year lease was submitted to Kia Finance as a 10,000mile/year lease.
Scheduled a recall visit for a 2018 Soul a month in advance. Dropped off the Soul in the AM that was supposed to be ready by 3, no calls, called them at 3:30, and was informed that they didn't have enough parts to complete the recall. Always get harrassed for positive reviews after service visits.
Tried several times to negotiate the purchase of a 2021 Soul Turbo that had been on their lot for several months. Consistently lowballed trade-in offers on our 2018 Soul that had very low mileage and was in excellent condition. They didn't want to negotiate on the price of the Soul, even though it wasn't the color we really wanted. Then to top things off they were adding dealer prep fees to the final price.
Ultimately, we ended up purchasing the exact Soul we wanted from First Team Kia, which is 30 minutes further from us than Southern Kia. We ended up saving about $3,000 on the purchase of the 2021 Soul.
Despite being "entitled" to the "free" oil changes and inspections for life on the Telluride at Southern we are going to either do them ourselves or go to one of our local shops for service.

Been working with someone named Tyler @ Matt Taylor Kia yesterday and today on an Everlasting Silver SXP with towing and nightfall that they said has been on the lot 2-3 weeks. They were charging $3,000 market price over MSRP. They agreed to come down to $1,000 over MSRP (which I was okay with so that I didn't have to wait for an order - trying to get one by April). They even offered to pick me up from the airport and I booked a flight for this coming Sunday to pick up. I kept asking for final out the door price to finish up paperwork, which they kept saying they would send. I followed up 4 times and they said they now have 3 appointments in the next day with people interested in paying $3,000 over or more, so that they won't honor the price they offered me anymore. He said it came from a higher-up manager who was upset I was even offered the $1,000 over MSRP amount. My search continues... but wanted to share my experience since I didn't find much in these forums about Matt Taylor Kia recently. Not cool of them to just change their mind when I had already made flight arrangements and agreed on a price.

I have a Telly on order with Kia of Muncie, however, I saw a couple vins come up on FailCat for the vehicle I'm looking for at Keffer Kia of Mooresville, North Carolina. I called and one of the vins was not sold and just rolled on the lot. Yea!.. but wait.... I told them that I have one on order for $1000 below MSRP, but would cancel and buy theirs for $1,000 more at MSRP today. Guy said.. I'll call you back... Called right back. They put a bunch cheap stuff on the car, coatings, etc.. and charge $3,995 for it. I said no thanks. I will continue to wait. :) They said that is mandatory for all of their Tellys, so don't bother if your looking for a deal.

Just wanted to share a bad dealer experience.. I ordered my Telluride from Superior Kia in Cincinnati, OH 3 months ago, and have pretty much been ghosted. I ordered from this dealer after seeing on this forum that they were offering $1,000 off MSRP for pre-ordering. They didn't take a deposit for my car, gave me no proof of the order and no updates. After speaking with several other dealers I learned that this is basically a scam. Kia dealers are not offering incentives other than $500 off for taking Kia financing, they should require a deposit, and production time locally is more along the lines of 60 days, and Tellurides have been arriving 7-14 days early. I should have been provided with paperwork and updates. Apparently they just took my information so they could order the car and will sell it on the lot. I'm not sure if they need customer information to order more Tellurides for their lot or why they would do this but just wanted to warn others to be wary of taking your business to Superior Kia in Cincinnati as they are not trustworthy and their customer service sucks.

I'm not sure if they need customer information to order more Tellurides for their lot or why they would do this but just wanted to warn others to be wary of taking your business to Superior Kia in Cincinnati as they are not trustworthy and their customer service sucks.
Have you asked them directly ? I think you should accept some blame for being naive as well

I have to second this a bit. No deposit + no contract (nothing in writing) violates Car Ordering 101. Doesn't forgive them if they indeed screwed you. But, you have absolutely no means of proving this happened. We all make mistakes we can learn from. Whenever I order something worth more than a few hundred dollars I always have something in writing. And writing + deposit even better. Didn't cost you anything except time! Throw another line in the water. This time you'll be a better fisherman (-woman)!

Try the Skillman dealerships around Indianapolis. These guys were my backup.

Yes I asked them directly. All they say is the car is ordered and they have no updates, that I will get $1,000 off MSRP when it arrives. I never said I was not naive. I have never ordered a car before. I guess I am naive for not knowing that a car dealership could scam people like that. I just wanted to get on here and try and warn other people who may also be inexperienced in the process of ordering a new car and thats why they're on this forum, seeking the help of others. Thanks for being an ass about it though!

Listen, maybe you should not be buying a car? It's certainly not for everyone. Despite the advances in transparency and the ease of buying a car online and pretty much anywhere in the country, it still is a game for people with their guard up. Try the Indy dealership I mentioned above and be sure to get something in writing and make a deposit. Make sure whatever you get in writing has OUT THE DOOR pricing on it which means either:

1. Every cent you pay; or
2. Every cent you will pay EXCEPT ONLY THESE EXPENSES: tax, title, registration.
