Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

If the markup price is the price on the window, then that’s their actual price. ’Murican Loophole…

Now if they’re showing MSRP on the window, then that’s an issue. Not that they’re going to do anything (again, ‘Murica), but if you want to have some fun and kill some time, call your state’s Attorney General Office and file a complaint.
I don't remember what the window sticker said, or didn't say. I was just razzing this guy because their own website says that "the fred beans promise is to never mark a car up, only down!," yet here they are, marking a car up $5000 over the posted price.

I believe Matt Blatt Kia has pictures of the window stickers WITHOUT the additional market adjustment on them, but it clearly states on their website that they are charging "$9995 market adjustment" on all Tellurides. You saying that's illegal? I might have nothing better to do than to jam up a predatory dealership *hmmmm* lol

If there’s no indication at the dealership that there’s a markup, it’s likely illegal, but, again, don’t expect anything to be done about it.

Dutch Miller in Charlotte, NC quoted us MSRP + $9,995 market adjustment if we were to order a SX P/N w. dune seats. I knew it was going to be crazy, but I got a quote anyways as they're close by and it would be worthwhile info for the folks on this forum.

Just placed an order with a dealer up near my hometown in Michigan that has agreed to MSRP. They were mentioned on the Good Dealer thread. Once I get in writing confirmation of the sale price being MSRP, I will post the details in my signature and the Good Dealer thread.

I must be in the wrong business. I can't even fathom how people can pay for a SX, prestige and Nightfall edition, PLUS 10 grand, PLUS travel 800 miles to then DRIVE a car back. Even paying for delivery for that far has got to be astronomical. Where are people getting all this money!??! lol

@Market Adjustor I think you may have read my post wrong. No, I definitely did not order 800mi away for MSRP+$10k lol

I live in Charlotte, but am originally from Michigan. Wasn't about to pay over MSRP so I shopped around; stumbled upon a "Good Dealer" charging MSRP in Michigan close to where my family lives. So when I can pickup the Telluride for MSRP, I will make a family trip out of it.

I just can't fathom a dealership putting markups on custom orders.
I can see if that was on the lot but if you're ordering a Telluride that you know is going to take 6 to 10 months to get you should not be having to pay a markup if anything it should be straight MSRP because you're having to wait that long for it.

Car mortgages. its insane. gonna be 10 years at this rate, b/c interest rates just got jacked on the short end, so the 'new 5-6 years' wont even cut it anymore. Dealer greed gonna blow, I hope.

Even paying at MSRP is a windfall for the dealership! If you are taking delivery as soon as it's delivered; which 99.9% of custom orders ARE, then the dealer gets to pocket holdback, floorplan assistance and marketing assistance from the manufacturer. ALL profit. In all honesty, custom orders should be INVOICE price, not MSRP, since the dealer is making money either way. But, even if they want to charge MSRP for the "supply chain shortages," or whatever, like you said, charging up from that, and 10k up from that, is just criminal.

Bob king in Winston Salem is where I ordered from. Every dealership around Charlotte was doing that. Hendricks charged MSRP but then required you to buy a $4k service package….

*****UPDATE***** I was contacted by a manager of the prior dealership who sold me my Telluride at $7000 over sticker. They are now located in a town 30 miles away from me. This dealership was bought by the new dealership that "refused" to give me my "free" 11 oil changes, even though they are still keeping the same name of the prior dealership. I guess Kia Corporate called him and was not happy with what they have found out. Long story short....they claim that the $5390 contract was supposed to read $539.00 for a pre purchase of a "maintenance package" of 11 oil changes and 5 tire rotations. Basically, they want you to pre-pay for oil/rotations at half price. (Which was never discussed , signed for , nor given paperwork.) They want to settle with me by giving me approx. $750 (which he claims is the cost of the next 10 oil changes. He wanted me to drive the 60 miles round trip to his dealership. (I refused). There is a Kia dealer less than half a mile from my home. I asked if he could arrange for them to do my oil changes . He refused. I told him that I would "settle" for the $750 . He did mention that the finance guy who pulled this nonsense is back working at his original dealership. I told him ....if I had just gotten my "free" oil changes as offered......I never would have known about the shady maintenance contract that was snuck into my deal, without my knowledge. Now, I wait for a check .

I just finished putting 12,000 miles on my Telluride in 5 months ! NY to San Diego and back in February. Today , just got back from NY to Punta Gorda, FL. and back. I am a big fan of the adaptive cruise control. I will never buy another car without that option. I did have to replace my windshield from stone chips on the NY-CA trip. The cost is about $800 bucks, which I have USAA coverage. I am very glad that I put the clear bra over the front end. I would be getting my hood and bumper repainted without it. I averaged almost 25 mpg and was doing alot of 80+ mph driving. It would do better if I didn't have a heavy foot.

@protozeoin any chance you'd be willing to share the good Kia dealer in Michigan? I live in SW Michigan but would be willing to go anywhere in the state (or IN, IL, or OH if necessary).

Gonna tell my dealership story; you guys tell me if it makes it "bad."

JUST left Kia of Turnersville (NJ). Took a test drive, (FINALLY!), of an EX Telly, and here are the things that got my antennae up.

First, I didn't get 3 steps inside the dealership before I was intercepted by a salesperson; Aimee. Very nice, but.....

I let her know that I was interested in taking a test drive, and she got my info and we headed outside to look at the vehicle. On the way out, she made some offhanded remark that reminded me about gas mileage, so I just asked to verify what the MPG for the Tellurides was. (Really, it was more of a test to just see how she would react to, and answer a simple, easily verifiable question. I already know the answer.) She goes, "we'll get into that." She then immediately launched into an obviously preplanned, and well rehearsed schpiel about the vehicle. "blah, blah, blah, engine drops out in case of a collision.....blah, blah, blah lane departure and adaptive cruise control," etc. I then started interjecting with questions, and asking to like sit in the back 3rd row, just to stay in control of the conversation, because it was obvious that she was going off of a script.

So far though, nothing egregious.

On the test drive, we start conversing about why I'm interested in a Telluride, and about the "chip shortage" and all that jazz, and I ask her about custom builds. At this point she tells me, "no.....we don't do custom orders. Its actually not something Kia does, and if any dealership tells you that, they aren't being truthful." WHAT?! Not only is this forum FILLED TO THE BRIM with people who custom ordered their Tellurides, it's just common knowledge that you can order a car you want and have it delivered! I couldn't believe what she was telling me, even though I KNEW it wasn't true, so I pushed her:

"So wait, so you say you have zero inventory, but you don't custom order cars.....so how do you sell them then?" She said that they call the "waiting list" of people "as the truck comes on the lot." She said they don't even take them off the truck before they have them sold to people waiting.

Bullshit.

But, I let her continue with the lie. I then inquire about the dealer add ons that were on THIS particular vehicle; nitrogen in the tires ($500), floor mats ($350), wheel locks ($70ish), etc, and asked if that is standard on EVERY vehicle, since "Kia doesn't allow custom orders." She said that EVERY VEHICLE gets those dealer add ons. The model I test drove was an EX, with a window sticker of $38k. After dealer add ons and market adjustments, they were asking $52k.

So, we do a pitiful lap around the block, and head back in, where she goes and grabs her manager, and he comes out for the hard sell. I love this dance, where he sits in HER chair, and she sits next to me, and he starts pushing for info. I cut HIM off as well, and go, "yeah, I just wanted to know about your market adjustment....I noticed on the window sticker that you are charging 95 hundred....is that standard for ALL Tellurides?"

At this point, he gets really evasive and says, "no....it depends......some of the sedans, you know......they get uh.....its like 4.....4 and a half." I say, "I'm only concerned with the Tellurides...." He says, "oh.....just the Tellys....well.....uh....you know, we work with you. If we can ever get the model you WANT in, you know.....we'll work with you."

I don't trust this dealership as far as I can throw it, and the fact that they told me to my face that Kia doesn't allow custom builds is just ASININE. That leads me to surmise that Kia is cracking down on dealerships; telling them that they can't add market adjustments on custom orders anymore, so dealerships are trying to lie to prevent people from doing it. I can LITERALLY go to kia.com right now and build a custom telly. I did it yesterday.

I asked the manager what his name was, since he never told me before he started his pitch, (Lou, btw), thanked him for his time, and got out of there. I wasn't to the door before I got an email from them, telling me that when I'm ready, please give them a call.

This is definitely "bad dealership," right?

Honestly... no.

They seem to be at least professional and transparent about the markup - maybe clueless or liars about custom orders but no where as horrible I've experienced other dealerships.

They aren't a "good" dealership... just average for Kia. Bad dealerships ask for credit checks before test drives, hide markups, throw in $5K in add-ons at financing, never provide anything in writing, etc.

While we can "custom" order it's not the same as Ford, VW, Telsa, or Rivian where they build everything to spec. It's closer to Hyundai/Toyota style ordering.

The 3 dealers that I went to in October, flat out told me that they would NOT be ordering a car to my specs. The reason being that they said it would be at least 6 months to a year before it would be built. I have since found out that many dealers just want delivery of as many Tellurides as they can get their dirty hands on , so they can put a huge mark up on them and make lots of money. If they had to wait for custom orders to be built, this chip shortage may end sooner than later and then once again competition between dealers would ensue and prices would have to go back to MSRP and below. They are selling fewer cars...BUT making more money. Once you drive off the lot, they don't give two sheets about you and your car.
*** Just a side note*** the navigation systems in my Telluride (and probably yours) is atrocious !! Its a 50/50 shot that it will give you correct directions or even identify the location you are looking for. I for one will probably never use it again except to locate a restaurant or gas station. Download the WAZE APP (on my cellphone) and you will ALWAYS get accurate information. My car was bought in late October and it already got a dealer 3 hour update that still sucks!

I had a bad experience with them a few years back , when I was buying an optima. Not a fan.

If your still looking for a Telly, Roger at Murray kia has been great, only thing is it's a super long wait these days.

Brandon Kia, near Tampa. Had the car I wanted coming in within the week, no one had put a deposit on it yet. But, they lowballed my trade in by $7000 and refused to budge. I walked.

Sell the car to like Carvana or Carmax, and skip using their trade in numbers. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If you have a chance to get a Telluride; especially exactly what you want, I’d pounce on it. IMHO

Courtesy dealerships often sell at MSRP but lowball trades. My experience with Courtesy Hyundai was hilarious. They offered $15K less than every physical dealership on my new Model Y that was thinking of trading it for an Ioniq 5 (at MSRP). My EV6 experience with Courtesy Kia was just as unpleasant.

Some dealerships "demand" a trade in and I suspect Courtesy Kia/Hyundai do that. This is why when I see "we only charge MSRP" from a dealer... I dig in a little further.

I just sold my 2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 to ALgo.com . It is run by autolenders.com . I went on line and looked up blue book values at KBB and others. They came in at around 35,000 to 44,000 for mine which only had 19,000 miles on it. I then went online and looked at Chevrolet dealers to see what stock they were selling . They were also anywhere from 35k - 45+k. I went on Carvana and they only offered 35k. I received a phone call 10 minutes later from ALgo and they had offered 35k online also. The guy asked me what upgrades I had done, which was only a bed cover and some LED lights. He asked me how much did I want to make and I told him that I would be happy with $40k. (Should have asked for 45k and come down.) I knew it would leave them room for a profit. He came back a minute later and agreed to buy it for 40k, less a $95 admin fee. I paid $43k for the car 3 and a half years ago. Sent some photos via email and it took one week to process and get the tow company to take it. Received a check for $39905 when they came to pick up the car. Yesterday I found my car online with Truecar.com and they have it listed for $43,995.
